WhatsApp Gets You Started. It Doesn't Get Your Business Found

WhatsApp Gets You Started. It Doesn't Get Your Business Found.

A lot of small businesses run entirely on WhatsApp. Someone starts a group, posts products, shares updates on their status, and gradually builds a customer base. It's a real, valid way to start, and plenty of businesses grow well this way.

But there's one thing WhatsApp can't do: help someone who's never heard of you find you in the first place.

WhatsApp works when there's already a connection. Someone saved your number, joined your group, or got your contact from a friend. That's great for communication. But think about someone searching Google for "restaurant in Buea with online booking" or "phone repair shop near me." They don't have your number. They're not in your group. They're not ignoring your business, they simply don't know it exists yet.

That's the real difference between a WhatsApp-only business and one with a website: WhatsApp keeps you connected to people who already know you. A website gives strangers a way to actually find you.

Discovery vs. Intent

Social media is great for discovery. Someone scrolls TikTok and stumbles onto your business by accident. But search is different. Someone typing "web developer in Cameroon" into Google already wants something specific, right now. A website gives your business a shot at showing up in that exact moment, which social media alone can't do.

Trust Matters Too

Even after someone finds your business, they're usually asking themselves: are these people legitimate? Where are they located? What do they actually offer? A well-built website answers those questions upfront, services, prices, location, contact info, before a customer has to ask. Skip that step, and you're relying entirely on WhatsApp back-and-forth to build trust one message at a time, which is slower and loses people along the way.

Less Friction, More Conversions

Without a website, a simple purchase can turn into five separate messages: "How much?" "Where are you located?" "Do you deliver?" and so on. A website answers most of that before the conversation even starts, so by the time someone messages you, they're actually ready to buy, not just gathering basic info.

So Should You Drop WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp is still one of the best tools for direct communication, taking orders, and answering questions. The point isn't replacing it. It's not relying on it as your only way of being found.

Think of it this way: WhatsApp helps you talk to people who already know you. A website helps people who don't know you yet discover that you exist.

Do You Actually Need One?

Not every business needs a complex website right now. But it's worth considering one if customers keep asking the same questions, if people are searching for what you offer but can't find you, or if you're relying entirely on social media and want another way to be discovered.

FAQs

Is a website better than WhatsApp? They serve different jobs. WhatsApp is for direct conversation. A website is for discovery and information before that conversation even starts.

Can I run a business using only WhatsApp? Yes, many do. The limit is discoverability, people who don't already know you won't easily find you.

Does a website guarantee I'll rank on Google? No. It gives you a place search engines can find, but SEO, content quality, and competition still matter.

A WhatsApp group can start your business. A website helps more people discover it exists in the first place. They work better together than either does alone.
